Sokoni and Kasim’s Story: Racing Towards Success, One Family’s Virtual Learning Journey

When the Hall family was determining where the best place to send their two youngest children to school was, Missouri Virtual Academy (MOVA) popped up in their research. After watching their oldest child not receive the support they needed through their school district, they decided to try a different route and send their two sons, Sokoni and Kasim, to MOVA. The move to MOVA ended up being the perfect option for their busy family. 

In addition to attending online school, Sokoni and Kasim both participate in BMX biking at a national level which often comes with a schedule that is not conducive to a traditional 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. school schedule. MOVA has given them the flexibility they need to continue emphasizing the importance of learning but also focus on BMX. Both boys practice most nights of the week and participate in national races that can require travel. The Hall family is able to strategically schedule lesson times through MOVA that work around their schedule. This has created less stress for the family and allowed the boys to put in the practice that led them to placing in the BMX Gold Cup Championship Series. 

Beyond giving the Halls more time to dedicate to BMX, MOVA has helped Sokoni and Kasim grow as students. Their teachers describe both boys as well-spoken, intelligent and kind people who set good examples for their fellow students. Their mother, Dawn Hall, shares that sentiment, saying, “Sokoni is a natural born leader and Kasim is just the sweetest guy ever.” Lessons at MOVA are planned and organized, so students know exactly what units are coming next. Outside of talking to their teachers and socializing with fellow students, this is their favorite part of the experience at MOVA. 

Dawn also has increased visibility into what the boys’ life is like at school and cherishes that she now has a front row seat to their progress. When Sokoni first started at MOVA, he had a hard time reading and his teacher was the first to recommend a dyslexia screening. Since then, she has seen her son improve immensely with reading, thanks to the care and patience of his teacher.  

MOVA has created a learning environment where Sokoni and Kasim are encouraged to put their best foot forward and prioritize learning while continuing to dedicate time to their interests outside of school.
